Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool: Late Daniel Sturridge wonderstrike cancels out Eden Hazard opener in Stamford Bridge draw
The former Blues striker netted in the 89th minute to earn the Reds a point
Daniel Sturridge smashed home a sensational 89th minute equaliser to snatch a point for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
After netting the vital strike which saw the Blues win 2-1 in the League Cup at Anfield four days earlier, Eden Hazard returned to haunt the Reds by bagging the opener, but his side’s lead was cancelled out by their former forward late on.
The first half began nervously for Chelsea, as they repeatedly gave the ball away under pressure from Liverpool while trying to play out from the back.
Mohamed Salah threatened with two early shots in the first 15 minutes, one gathered by Kepa Arrizabalaga, the other fired high and wide.
However, ten minutes later, the breakthrough came at the opposite end.
A beautiful move started by Eden Hazard saw him link up with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in midfield, with the latter threading a pass which left the Belgian winger facing Alisson on the left.
Hazard fired across goal into the far corner, taking the Brazilian by surprise and sending Stamford Bridge into ecstasy.
The Reds pressed for the remainder of the half, but to no avail. Salah was played in behind Marcos Alonso and rounded Kepa Arrizabalaga, but went too wide and allowed Antonio Rudiger to get back and block his shot on the line.
Liverpool upped the tempo in the second period and nearly found a leveller on 58 minutes when Sadio Mane’s snap shot was well saved by Arrizabalaga.
The tables then turned five minutes later as a quick free kick from N’Golo Kante put Eden Hazard in on goal, though his lashed effort was well saved by Alisson to keep the score at 1-0.
Jurgen Klopp’s men had their best chances of the second period after the 70th minute as Andy Robertson’s ball from the left landed at the feet of Xherdan Shaqiri, who astonishingly shot wide.
Then, two minutes later, David Luiz cleared Roberto Firmino’s header off the line.
Just as all hope was starting to look lost, the equaliser finally came with one minute of normal time remaining.
Daniel Sturridge blasted a left footed strike into the top corner of his old club’s net from 25 yards to earn Liverpool a share of the spoils.
STAR MAN – EDEN HAZARD
Despite Daniel Sturridge’s last-gasp heroics, Eden Hazard was today’s star man as he proved a consistent threat and kept up his early-season goalscoring form with a clinical first-half strike which initially put his team ahead.
MOMENT OF THE MATCH
Without doubt the moment of the match came right at its conclusion. Liverpool had knocked on Chelsea’s door with well-worked build-up play and clever tactical moves for the entire match. Then, when that all failed, they brought on Daniel Sturridge who took matters into his own hands by producing a stunning 25-yarder which snatched a point for his side.
