Liverpool transfer news: Alisson was NOT first-choice goalkeeper target as Jan Oblak interest revealed

The Reds brought Alisson to Anfield for over £60million – but they actually wanted a different glovesman

Liverpool made Alisson the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of world football earlier this year, bringing in the Brazil international from Roma for around £67million.

His record was quickly surpassed by Chelsea’s signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Club, but it is fair to say Alisson has started the season better than the Blues glovesman having kept clean sheets in all three Premier League matches so far.

Alisson has caught the eye with some impressive performances in the early stage of the season

But, if Liverpool had got their way, Alisson would not have been turning out at Anfield this summer – as they, in fact, wanted to sign a different goalkeeper.

According to Spanish media outlet AS, as quoted by Sport Witness, Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice target to replace Loris Karius as Liverpool’s goalkeeper was Jan Oblak, of Atletico Madrid, not Alisson.

The Reds were reported to be interested in Oblak during the summer, with Chelsea also keeping tabs on the Slovenia international when it became clear Thibaut Courtois would be leaving Stamford Bridge.

It is Liverpool who are named in the report as being the club ‘most interested’ in securing Oblak’s services over the summer, though they eventually moved for Alisson, who was bought for £67million – over £20million cheaper than Oblak’s release clause.

Oblak has held talks with Atletico to extend his current deal, which expires in 2021, and it is expected his release clause will further increase when putting pen to paper on new terms.
