Vinicius Jr makes Real Madrid Castilla debut

Vinicius Jr, the young Brazilian forward who cost Real Madrid £39 million ($50m), made his debut for the club’s Castilla side on Sunday.

Real agreed a deal to acquire the forward in 2017, but he only joined up with the club this summer, having been loaned back to Flamengo for the remainder of the 2017-18 campaign.

Vinicius had been training with Real’s senior side, and played for the first team during pre-season, but Julen Lopetegui announced on Saturday that the 18-year-old would play with the second team for the duration of the season.

“He’s part of the squad. When he’s called up he’ll be in with a chance of playing and when he’s not included, he’ll be able to play for Castilla,” he said.

“However, he’ll be training with us on a daily basis. He’s very young and has just arrived in Europe. He’s really keen to learn and we’ve got to give him the time to settle that every player needs. His performance levels in training have been of the highest quality.

“We’re keeping a close eye on his progress and when we think that the time is right, he’ll be included in the matchday squad,”

The Brazilian subsequently became the most expensive player ever to play in the Spanish third tier.

Vinicius wore the No.11 shirt during his debut – Castilla do not assign numbers to individual players, instead using a system based on positions.

Thus, as he was deployed on the left flank, he took the No.11, as Gareth Bale does in the first team.

The teenager made a number of excellent runs during the encounter, showcasing his skills, as Castilla won 2-0.

Vinicius was substituted in the 73rd minute of the encounter, and was given a standing ovation as he left the field.

Vinicius is a Brazil youth international, and has been capped at Under-15 and Under-17 level, scoring 12 goals in 15 games for the latter.
